What is Academic Advising?
Academic advising is a very important part of your college experience. Advisors are available to support you with specialized advising so that you can begin your college career confident that you are heading in the right direction.
What can your academic advisor help you with?
Your academic advisor can help you:
- Explore your academic and career goals.
- Select classes that help you explore your interests, identify your eventual major or meet requirements for a major already chosen.
- Build a class schedule that balances your homework and class load.
- Help you pursue a major that you’ll love.
How do I make an advising appointment?
Advising appointments are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Transfer Resources
- Transfer Center – Visit the Transfer Center for information on transferring to UW-Milwaukee or other UW System schools. Check in with your academic advisor if you have questions.
- UW-Milwaukee Transfer Guides and Agreements – If you are interested in attending UW-Milwaukee, visit uwm.edu to see suggested College of General Studies courses that apply to your major.

- Late adds must be approved by the professor of the course. Submit a signed Registration Change Form or forward an email from the professor to your campus’s Student Affairs office.

Retroactive Application for Graduation
Students who met the Associate Degree requirements but that did not apply for graduation may file for retroactive graduation. Students start this process by reaching out to advisors from their campus and requesting a confirmation of their degree progress:

- Waukesha: wak-cgs@uwm.edu
The student may need to provide transcripts from other schools or universities to ensure that they meet degree requirements. Please check in with the advisor(s) on your next steps.

Former UW Colleges Students
- When emailing advisors, mention the last semester you believe you attended.
- If you have changed your name since last attending, include your former name in the email.
- Please be patient. Advisors must request your old records from the former UW Colleges before they can review your degree progress.
- Once an advisor has reviewed your degree progress, they will contact you. You may need to take a few additional credits to complete your degree.
- An advisor will offer you suggestions on courses required to complete your degree and direct you toward the application process to become a UW-Milwaukee College of General Studies student.
- If you have attended another school since UW-Washington County/UW-Waukesha and you believe those credits may apply toward your associate degree, you will have to order official copies of your transcripts and send them to the UW-Milwaukee Admissions Office.

Former UW-Milwaukee College of General Studies Students
